Want Beautiful Landscaping? Create The Perfect Environment For Lawn And Plants

If you want your landscaping to look beautiful, you need to ensure your lawn and plants look healthy and grow well. You can do this by providing them with the perfect environment to grow well. This includes using topsoil and yard compost. Below is information on what these two things are and how they can be used.

Topsoil

Topsoil is made of organic matter that has been decomposed. It is used between the subsoil and the surface layer of soil. When purchasing topsoil for your landscaping, make sure it is rich in nutrients. If you cannot find good topsoil, you can make your own. To do this use about three or so inches of compost to a depth of about eight or so inches. You can ensure the topsoil you purchase is already rich in nutrients by purchasing it from a landscaping contractor, a garden center, etc.

Topsoil is often used to fill in holes or eroded spots, such as on your lawn, or fill up raised garden beds. Topsoil is also used if planting a new lawn or replacing a patchy or damaged lawn. If you plant grass seeds a thin layer of topsoil protects the seeds until they sprout.

Yard Compost

Compost can be used to add nutrients to topsoil. Compost should not be used as soil on its own, however. For example, it should never be used as soil in a raised garden bed or to plant flowers. Instead, it is added and mixed in with the topsoil to make it more nutrient-rich. Adding compost to your yard, flower gardens, etc. will help increase the chances that you will have healthy grass, flowers, and more.

You can purchase yard compost at garden centers in bags. You can also make your own yard compost. To do this purchase a bin to put the compost in. This could be a garbage can, or you can purchase a compost bin.

Compost is mixing brown materials, which include things like straw, twigs, dry leaves, etc., with green materials, which include things like grass clippings and vegetable scraps from the kitchen. Break up or chop both the brown and green materials which will help these things break down much faster. The compost should be kept moist so check it daily and add water if needed. Turn the compost using a shovel as it needs to have air to be healthy. This will also prevent the compost from smelling bad. When the compost is ready it looks much like soil. You can then use it in your garden, on your lawn, for flowers, and more.

Talk with a landscape contractor if you need help in using topsoil and yard compost with your landscaping.
